CREATING OPTIMUM IMMUNITY (Part II)
In the last issue of this newsletter I wrote about a variety of natural products that display promise for supporting immune function and aiding in maintaining or regaining one’s optimum health.

In this issue I am continuing my discussion by introducing you to a new product I have become very excited about. Some of you are already familiar with Nature’s Biotics soil based organisms and have reported excellent results in using this product.

HSO’s - BEYOND PROBIOTICS, A NATURAL WAY TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY by Dr. Herb Rubin
A disturbing question I’m often asked as a health professional is, “I try to eat right, I take supplements, but I just don’t feel healthy. What can I do?” We are seeing a dramatic rise in degenerative, chronic and auto-immune diseases, even in children. Diseases that were once unusual, such as chronic fatigue, severe allergies, asthma, fibromyalgia, diabetes, candidiasis, severe digestive disorders, and environmental/chemical sensitivities are becoming common. More people complain of getting recurring colds, flu and infections. Each generation seems weaker than the last. With all the nutritional supplements and advances in traditional medicine, why is this happening?

Why do we get sick so often?
For thousands of years humans ate fruits and vegetables from soil rich in life-sustaining bacterial organisms. But after World War II, in our quest to reduce unwanted disease-causing pathogens, chemicals and pesticides were introduced to agriculture and chlorination to water treatment. As a result, most beneficial bacteria were eliminated along with the harmful ones.

Modern lifestyles also contribute greatly to critical gastrointestinal disruption. Antibiotics, excess sugar and alcohol, carbonated beverages, chemical food additives and over-the-counter drugs can alter the acid/alkaline balance of the intestinal tract, often killing beneficial bacteria and creating the perfect environment for harmful microbes to grow. Without the “good” or “friendly” bacteria to keep them in check, these “bad” bacteria can eventually overrun our body and severely depress our immune system.

We usually have a balance of about 85 percent good to 15 percent harmful organisms in the intestinal tract. But most of us today have the opposite ratio, creating a chronically unhealthy condition. Nutritional researchers are convinced that as much as 90 percent of known diseases may be caused or exacerbated by these gastrointestinal imbalances. When toxins are dispersed through the bloodstream, a precondition of “intestinal toxemia,” poisoning by harmful gut bacteria occurs. As far back as 1928, H.H. Booker, D.C., remarked, “It is now universally conceded that autointoxication is the underlying cause of an exceptionally large group of symptom complexes.”

Generally, intestinal toxemia manifests as one or more of the following: fatigue, nervousness, gastrointestinal upset, impaired nutrition, skin problems, hormonal problems, circulatory problems, headaches, arthritis, sciatica and low back pain, allergy, asthma, eye, ear, nose, and throat disease, heart irregularities, appendicitis, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, psoriasis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and pathological changes in the breasts. All of these have responded to therapy directed at a toxemic state in the intestine.

I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that the number of chronic and degenerative diseases has multiplied dramatically since we killed off most of our good bacteria. It is just now being understood what a critical role these homeostatic soil organisms, or HSOs, play in proper immune function. They are called homeostatic because their function is to work with our immune system to help create homeostasis or balance of body systems.

Each generation seems weaker than the last.
HSOs were identified approximately 20 years ago in pristine soil found in a secret location outside of the civilized world. The beneficial bacteria were further refined in a laboratory to remove pathogens. The HSO formula, as it is widely known, comes from colonies of these beneficial bacteria that are bred in conditions that mimic the pristine earth where they were originally found.

Micro-organisms invasion.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are currently invading hospitals, nursing homes and day-care centers. Harmful bacteria that cause food poisoning appear in fruits, vegetables and meats. In response, medical scientists are finally refocusing attention on the indispensable part played by living organisms in our bodies. For example, farmers have just started spraying newborn chicks with beneficial bacteria to halt the growth of the deadly salmonella bacteria in their bodies.

More than 400 different species of micro-organisms, totaling about four pounds in an ideal ratio of 85 percent good to 15 percent bad, inhabit the human digestive tract, far exceeding the number of tissue cells. If one has them in sufficient quantity, friendly bacteria are responsible for numerous essential body functions. These functions include preventing infiltration and growth of harmful bacteria, fungi, yeast, viruses, molds, and other parasites; maintaining chemical and hormonal balance; producing and regulating vitamins; stimulating the entire digestive system; and promoting proper immune function.

In The Probiotic Revolution, Dr. David Williams states, “The friendly bacteria in your bowels have far-reaching effects you’ve probably never dreamed of. These hard working organisms produce a variety of substances that can prevent cancerous tumors, inactivate viruses, produce natural antibiotics and vitamins and reduce cholesterol. New research has linked these bacteria to even more wonders.”

Beyond probiotics.
Most health-savvy readers understand that probiotic is a generic term for beneficial bacteria. Although recognized as a probiotic, HSOs are really in a class by themselves. HSOs are more aggressive, more stable and better at colonization than their probiotic cousins.

HSOs crowd out pathogens, thereby helping to balance the entire digestive system by lowering colonic pH and restoring the proper bacterial ratio (homeostasis). They assist in restoring the natural alkalinity of the blood by eliminating harmful acid wastes. HSOs help to balance the hormonal system by stabilizing blood sugar and restoring glandular integrity. These beneficial bacteria stimulate the immune system to produce powerful immune chemicals.

Traditional probiotics are more limited in action. Even if the standard probiotics are able to get through to the gastrointestinal tract, they have little chance of implanting. Most people have alkaline colons; acidophilus (acid loving) can only survive in an acidic environment. Harmful bacteria can quickly overwhelm the good strains. Since most of us have far too many harmful bacteria, the standard probiotic doesn’t have much of a chance.

Many live probiotics are unstable and must be refrigerated. Their potency is listed at the time of manufacture and cannot be assured at time of consumption. The HSO formula is live, non-mutated primary cultures dormant in the capsule (not freeze dried or fermented) and activated by body fluids. It has a five-year shelf life and does not need to be refrigerated.

Since transient HSOs were originally in food, they are resistant to stomach acids and are capable of implanting, surviving and metabolizing in all intestinal environments regardless of the quantity of harmful bacterial strains present or the pH of the gut. As organisms that were originally ingested with food every day, they must be replenished daily. The trick is to get them from the soil alive, breed them without mutation and get them to live inside a capsule until they are ingested. The HSO formula accomplishes all of this.

The immune system.
In addition to containing live beneficial bacteria derived from soil, over 70 micronutrients and cofactors, laboratory analyses have shown that the HSO formula has three unique immune stimulating effects.

1. Stimulation of the body’s natural alpha Interferon production.
The human body produces alpha-interferon in order to protect cells from a variety of invaders (viruses, antigens). Peter Rothschild, M.D., Ph.D., who has conducted in-depth laboratory analyses of the HSO formula, reports that once HSOs colonize in the gastrointestinal tract, one of their chief actions is to uniquely stimulate the body’s own natural production of alpha interferon. Dr. Rothschild postulates that the production of alpha interferon has caused the HSO formula to be highly effective in helping the immune system deal with a wide variety of chronic and degenerative diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome, viral herpes, hepatitis B and C, influenza, and many more.

2. Stimulation and related antibodies.
Once established in the human gastrointestinal tract, the beneficial bacteria contained in the HSO formula activate the production of B-lymphocytes and related antibodies. These extra B-cells provide the immune system with a huge pool of “non-specific” antibodies ready to attack invaders at a moments notice. “The beauty of all of this is that this huge reservoir of extra antibodies is always on hand for the immune system to utilize, as long as the individual is ingesting (HSOs) on a regular basis. By ingesting (HSOs) regularly, the effectiveness of the immune system is vastly enhanced. This extra contingent of antibodies is always available to attack infection, therefore the immune system doesn’t have to overwork to fight off infection,” says Dr. Rothschild.

3. Crucial lactoferrin supplementation.
Lactoferrin is an iron binding protein that retrieves iron from the foods we eat and delivers it wherever iron is needed by the body. One of its functions is to help protect the body from invading yeast, parasites and viruses by depriving them of the iron they need to flourish. Many of us do not naturally produce enough lactoferrin. The HSO formula produces needed lactoferrin in the body.

Absorbable micronutrients.
In addition to its probiotic and immune stimulating effects, the HSO formula provides a unique micronutrient component. The more than 70 micronutrients in the HSO formula provide the body with materials needed to correct nutrient absorption deficiencies. A Case Study
In 1994, at age 19, Jordan, a healthy, active teenager, was stricken with a devastating illness. He was diagnosed with Crohn’s colitis, a sometimes fatal “wasting disease” characterized by long-term inflammation of the bowel.

As in most chronic conditions, Jordan’s immune system began to fail. He suffered from intestinal parasites, severe candida, extreme anemia, food allergies, diabetes, excruciating abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, poor circulation, liver problems, chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, arthritis, insomnia, hair loss, intestinal dysbiosis, prostate and bladder infections, irregular heartbeat, eye inflammation and chronic depression.
