Nutritional Support for Cancer, AIDS & Other Life Threatening Diseases

I recently had a friend ask me the following: “With so many products that seem to show promise for helping one deal with cancer and AIDS, how can you decide which ones are most important?”

This is a very difficult question to answer. I am not a doctor and I can not prescribe products for treating either of these diseases. What I can do, however, is sight what I have read about various products and what I have learned from alternative practitioners who work with cancer & AIDS patients. The one common thread among alternative physicians is that most of them take a shotgun approach using a variety of natural products, coupled with dietary changes and various lifestyle modifications, knowing that success is more likely when using a multi-tiered protocol.

Out of the dozens of natural products now available that display promise, I have zeroed in on what I consider to be 12 of the most important. These include: Ezzeac plus Cat’s Claw, VPS-Coriolus versicolor, Lycopene, Cat’s Claw, MSM, Natural Progesterone Cream, Calcium D’ Glucarate, Co-enzyme Q-10, Essential Fatty Acids, Primal Defense HSO’s, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Olive Leaf Extract. I will now briefly touch on each of these 12, so that you the reader may understand why I have chosen them. I have attempted to list the 4 most important first, with the remaining 8 in no particular order of preference. Please understand that this list will no doubt vary with each individuals situation and is highly speculative, based on anecdotal reports and my personal research.

1. Ezzeac plus Cat’s Claw
Is an updated version of an original Ojibway Indian herbal formula used by Nurse Rene Caisse to successfully treat terminally ill cancer patients in Canada, and later under the supervision of Dr. Charles A. Brusch in the United States, spanning over 60 years. This formula includes the original herbs Caisse worked with: sheep sorrel, burdock root, Turkey rhubarb and slippery elm, with the addition of cat’s claw & watercress. Testimonials from both doctors & patients have been pouring in ever since this modified formula was first introduced in 1995. These reports suggest that this product has been successful in helping to shrink tumors in many patients, prolonging life and reducing the side effects of conventional therapies. Ezzeac plus Cat’s Claw may also have applications as nutritional support for diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, hepatitis, candidiasis, compromised immunity and liver function, and even AIDS.

2. VPS-Coriolus versicolor
A standardized extract of an Oriental medicinal mushroom, (trademarked as PSK in Japan), that contains high levels of beta-glucan polysaccharides and other beneficial phytochemicals. Twenty plus years of clinical & laboratory studies in Japan, have proven PSK to have an ability to increase the five year survival rate of many cancer patients, when used in conjunction with conventional therapies. In fact, PSK now accounts for approximately 25% of national insurance expenditures for the chemical treatment of cancer in that country.

Continued research on Coriolus and beta-glucan polysaccharides indicates that PSK can significantly boost immune function, possesses powerful anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties and can greatly limit the destructive and devastating effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Recently trademarked in the U.S. as VPS, Coriolus versicolor standardized extract may also be helpful in cases of hepatitis, herpes, compromised immunity and even AIDS.

3. Lycopene
Within the last decade many studies have been performed on this member of the carotenoid family. Results of these studies strongly indicate that lycopene is the most powerful of all the carotenoids, even more powerful than beta-carotene, at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. In both clinical and laboratory research, lycopene displayed an ability to suppress the growth of every cancer cell line it was tested on. These included: endometrial, breast, lung and prostate cancers. In a trial performed at the Karmanos Cancer Center, Detroit, MI., 30 men with prostate cancer were divided into 2 groups. One group received 30 mg of lycopene per day, for only 21 days prior to surgery. The other group received no intervention. Biopsies of the removed glands after surgery of the lycopene group, revealed that there was a regression in the size of their tumors, as well as decreased bio-markers of proliferation, increased differentiation and apoptosis markers and an average 20% reduction in serum PSA levels at the end of the three week period. These results suggest that lycopene may play a significant role in both the prevention and treatment of prostate cancers.

4. Cat’s Claw, (Uncaria tomentosa)
Numerous anecdotal reports indicate that this remarkable botanical may help treat or alleviate the symptoms of a wide diversity of health problems, including: Crohn’s disease, ulcers, dysbiosis, parasites and inflammatory bowel, hayfever, asthma and other allergies, chemical and environmental sensitivities, arthritis, fibromyalgia, bursitis, shingles & canker sores, chronic fatigue, diabetes, candidiasis, circulatory problems, prostatitis, abnormal growths, multiple sclerosis, various viral and bacterial infections; including secondary infections in AIDS patients. There have also been reports of cat’s claw’s ability to reduce the side effects of conventional cancer therapies. Adding an additional 6,000 mg per day in divided doses, may further boost the effectiveness of Ezzeac plus Cat’s Claw .

5. MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane)
A sulfur containing molecule related to DMSO, that is believed to have tremendous detoxifying properties, works synergistically with vitamin C, increases the utilization of beneficial phytochemicals found in medicinal herbs, such as those in Ezzeac plus Cat’s Claw and medicinal mushrooms, such as those in VPS (Coriolus versicolor). MSM has the unique characteristic of making our cells more permeable, allowing easier release of toxins and easier absorption of nutrients. Many are finding MSM in combination with cat's claw, to be helpful in alleviating symptoms associated with environmental toxins, various pathogens and inflammatory conditions such as: allergies, IBS, CFS, MS, parasites, arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc. Therapeutic amounts of MSM generally range from 3-6 grams in divided doses daily; however, even higher doses have been used successfully without producing any side effects.

6. Natural Progesterone Cream
According to articles written by Dr’s. John Lee & Joseph Mercola, natural progesterone cream is a safe alternative to synthetic estrogen hormones and displays promise for helping to prevent & reverse prostate, breast, ovarian, uterine, endometrial, small cell lung and other cancers. Regular use may also promote better fat metabolism, act as an anti-depressant, promote restful sleep, facilitate thyroid hormone activity, normalize blood sugar levels, alleviate hormone related migraines, normalize blood clotting & monthly cycles, restore cell oxygen levels, act as a natural diuretic, prevent & reverse fibrocystic breast disease, maintain lining of the uterus, stimulate bone cell rebuilding (possibly reversing osteoporosis), promote natural corticosteroid production for protection & reversal of inflammatory conditions & allergies, help prevent heart disease, provide protection from petrochemicals and restore normal libido.

7 & 8. Calcium D’ Glucarate & Co-enzyme Q-10
As reported in the Townsend Letter for Doctors & Patients (reprinted from Let’s Live magazine), by Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D.; through a natural biochemical process known as glucuronidation, Calcium D’ glucarate helps eliminate excessive estrogen and estrogen mimicking compounds in the body, believed to be one of the most prevalent causes of breast cancer. In so doing, Calcium D’ Glucarate may not only help prevent breast cancer; but possibly even help treat the disease; and may be a better choice than Tamoxifen, which was found to cause cancer and blindness in a five year study conducted at over 133 medical centers around the world. In addition to Calcium D’ Glucarate, Dr. Rogers also mentions the use of Co-enzyme Q10 and vitamins A & D in the treatment of breast cancer.

In one Danish study, researchers gave 390 mg per day of Co-Q10 to women with metastatic breast cancer. After several months, four of the woman experienced complete remission. One woman’s cancer which had spread to the liver, completely disappeared after 11 months. Co-enzyme Q-10 is an essential nutrient necessary for energy production at the cellular level throughout the body and has been especially recognized as important for promoting healthy heart & cardiovascular, brain & nervous system, liver & metabolic function and boosting over-all immunity.

In their comprehensive approaches to breast cancer, some holistic oriented physicians are suggesting 300-400 mg. of Co-Q10 along with 4,000-6,000 mg. of Calcium D’ Glucarate in divided doses daily.

9. Essential Fatty Acids - fish oil, flaxseed oil, DHA
The American diet has been found to be severely deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. While opinions differ as to which source is best, fish oil, flax oil or DHA supplements (derived from sea algae); all have been recommended by alternative practitioners, for the prevention and treatment of numerous health conditions including cancer & AIDS. Many health professionals agree that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, inflammatory & autoimmune disorders, (i.e. arthritis, Crohn’s disease, allergies, psoriasis, lupus, etc.), prevent or reduce the pain of migraines, stimulate lymphatic function, inhibit tumor growth, combat candida, alcoholism, drug addiction, depression and mental disorders, viral infections, kidney and urinary problems, chronic fatigue, excema, acne and other skin disorders.

10. Primal Defense - homeostatic soil organisms
Represents the ultimate in probiotic immune supporting friendly bacteria that are absolutely essential for the optimum functioning of our gastrointestinal tracts, digestion, absorption and utilization of all nutrients in our foods & supplements, the elimination of harmful microorganisms and particularly; parasites and fungus (now linked as major contributing causes of cancer), as well as numerous environmental chemicals & toxins. HSO’s also stimulate the natural production of alpha-interferon, lactoferrin, T-cells and non-specific anti-bodies. Many consider Primal Defense to be one of the most important dietary supplements for people living in today’s microbial & toxin infested World.

11. Alpha Lipoic Acid
Also contains sulfur and is an exciting nutrient that many are referring to as the universal metabolic antioxidant, capable of recharging energy levels and the bodies natural defenses. Recent studies seem to indicate that this nutrient has the ability to neutralize and help the liver discard numerous environmental toxins and chemicals, especially heavy metals & solvents, (also being linked as contributing factors in cancer, AIDS, autoimmune and other serious diseases), while greatly enhancing overall liver metabolism & liver regeneration. There is even evidence to support, that supplementation with alpha lipoic acid, may have benefits not only for the liver; but for those who suffer from health problems associated with the pancreas, especially diabetes, the heart, eyes, brain & central nervous system. Therapeutic amounts of A.L.A. generally range from 100-200 mg. with each meal.

12. Olive Leaf Extract (preferably standardized)
According to a book and numerous articles by Dr. Morton Walker, olive leaf extract may be the most powerful, natural, wide spectrum antibiotic, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiparasitic agent on the planet. It contains Oleuropean, a powerful glycoside, that may have applications in both the prevention and treatment of no less than 120 illnesses. Olive leaf extract has been found to be able to kill or inhibit the growth of all known herpes viruses, polio, coxsackie, retroviruses including HIV, influenza, rhinovirus, etc. It has also been shown to be effective against most bacteria (staph, Strep, Lyme, etc.), candida yeast, fungal infections, worms, other parasites and protozoa. Though 1,000 mg. 3x per day is considered therapeutic, one may want to gradually build up to this level to avoid a die-off or herxheimer/detox reaction.


Depending on the type of cancer or individual situation, one might also consider the following dietary supplements:
Haelan 951 Soy Beverage, chlorella, Whole Leaf Aloe Vera, oxygen supplements, Vitamin E & Selenium, N. Acetyl Cysteine, Grapeseed OPC's, Modified Citrus Pectin, Proteolytic Enzymes, Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake and Himumatsutake mushroom extracts.

A comprehensive nutritional program incorporating a variety of dietary supplements, will have only limited success if one is unwilling to make necessary and crucial changes to their everyday diet. Don’t expect to get well if you continue to consume fast foods, highly processed foods, commercial oils, shortening & hydrogenated fats, commercial meat, poultry & dairy products, alcohol, soda pop, chocolate, copious amounts of sugar, white flour, coffee, etc. If you are willing to clean up your diet, I believe that your chances of success will be enhanced tremendously!

Through the years, I have personally heard of many cases of cancer and even full blown AIDS going into complete remission from both doctors and patients utilizing various herbal & nutritional products, when combined with a predominantly organic whole foods diet, along with adequate amounts of pure drinking water (6-8 glasses per day including 1/2 juiced lemon in 2 of these glasses), sometimes in as little as 3-6 months!

The key here I believe, is to saturate the system with a wide range combination of the specific nutrients & phytochemicals that can work synergistically to enhance the innate healing and regenerative power of the human organism. I believe that the products I have mentioned above display this kind of potential.

Nineteen years ago my father died as a result of being injected with an experimental chemotherapy drug and one year later my mother died from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). I strongly believe that they both might be alive and healthy today, if I knew then what I know now. As long as your alive there’s always hope and always a chance that health can be restored.


SPEAKING OF A.L.S.
Chronic or long term Systemic yeast, fungus and parasitic infections, chronic or long term exposure to pesticides, solvents and other toxic chemicals, heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, aluminum and mercury, have all been linked as causative factors in cancer, auto-immune and diseases of the central nervous system, including: Alzheimer's, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and A.L.S. Though there are numerous nutrients and herbs that display an ability to destroy, neutralize and cleanse from the body disease causing microorganisms, parasites, toxic metals, pesticides and chemical solvents; we may only be scratching the surface until we eliminate the use of two widely used extremely dangerous and toxic substances: Nutra-Sweet & Mercury Amalgams.

NUTRA-SWEET & MERCURY AMALGAMS
Mercury used in modern dentistry and aspartame more commonly known as Nutra-sweet, used in diet and low calorie processed foods and beverages, may be two of the most prevalent causes of serious diseases.

In the last year I have come across many articles written by doctors and researchers that have convinced me that anyone suffering from ALS, Alzheimer’s, auto-immune, and diseases of the nervous system, cancer or AIDS, needs to consider removal of all mercury amalgam fillings and the strict avoidance of any and all foods containing Nutra-sweet. Why? Because as long as mercury remains in ones teeth, mercury vapors are being released, breathed into the lungs where they enter the blood stream on an ongoing continual basis, exposing every organ and system of the body to one of the most toxic substances on earth!

Mercury exposure has now been linked with: cancer, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimer’s, headaches, TMJ, chronic fatigue and other debilitating diseases.

Dramatic improvements have been seen in ALS, MS, Alzheimer’s and other patients shortly after having their mercury amalgam fillings replaced with less toxic materials. Anaerobic bacteria sometimes present in conventional root canals has also been linked as a cause of some of the above mentioned diseases and these should be strongly considered for removal as well.

Nutra-sweet (Aspartame) is made up of two amino acids: Aspartic acid and Phenylalanine and methyl alcohol, a poison that is extremely destructive to the immune and central nervous systems.

Methyl alcohol exposure from Nutra-sweet has now been linked as a major factor in dramatically increasing incidences of: multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, brain tumors, seizures & convulsion’s, hyper-activity and attention deficit disorder, headaches, dizziness, paralysis, disorientation, anxiety, sleeplessness, numbness, facial pain, slurred speech, depression, memory loss, visual disturbances other neurological symptoms and auto-immune diseases.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT MAY BE HELPFUL
In addition to eliminating Nutra-sweet, removing root canals and replacing mercury fillings, there are a number of supplements that may be helpful. For general detoxification, there is probably no better combination than 3-6 grams each of Cat’s Claw and MSM, taken in 3 divided doses daily. This combination can destroy numerous disease causing pathogens, boost over-all immunity, relieve many inflammatory conditions and digestive disturbances, and help detoxify and cleanse from the body numerous environmental toxins. (Sorry if this sounds repetitious.)

If you have an acute or chronic deep seated microbial infection that does not respond to the above, you might consider olive leaf extract 1000 mg. 3x per day. Though somewhat more expensive, olive leaf extract seems able to knock out a wide diversity of infections, when other products fail. If taking olive leaf extract for the first time, start off with no more than 500 mg. twice daily gradually increasing the amount over a 2-3 week period in order to avoid a possible die-off reaction.

For additional support in detoxifying heavy metals and chemical solvents, enhancing immune, cardiovascular and nervous system function, I might add alpha lipoic acid, Co-Q10 and N. Acetyl Cysteine.

Though not as effective as replacing mercury fillings, one might consider using Dentox, a Homeopathic product from France designed to remove mercury from the body or having chelation therapy performed by a doctor who is a certified chelation therapist. Once amalgams are replaced by a dentist who has been properly trained in this procedure, Dentox or chelation may still be advisable to remove any remaining mercury deposits left in the body.
