THE “NEW” PRIMAL DEFENSE

1.) Beneficial soil bacteria used to be ingested as part of our food grown in rich, unpolluted soil. Poor waste elimination often results in auto-intoxication or “ intestinal toxemia” which poisons the rest of the body, as these toxic waste materials become absorbed through the lining of the intestinal tract. This leads to a chronic condition Known as leaky gut syndrome.

2.) The immune system simply will not function at the necessary optimal levels without plant lipids (fats) called sterols and sterolins. Found in freshly harvested plants, plant sterolins are completely dissipated within 6-8 hours after harvest. Consequently, we get very few of these indispensable lipids, since most of the produce we buy (including organic) is out of the ground for longer than 6 hours; those sterolins that are left are destroyed by cooking, freezing and processing. More than 130 studies have shown, that restoring Phytosterols & Sterolins to the diet in therapeutic amounts, helped normalize the immune response in many autoimmune and low immunity patients.

3.) Densely nutritious green foods are the very source of life. To function optimally, we must consume three to five servings of raw green leafy vegetables daily. HSO’s (homeostatic soil organisms)
The base ingredient of Primal Defense is the original proprietary beneficial bacteria (HSO) used for over 20 years. What’s the Difference Between HSO’s and Traditional Probiotics?
Even if they manage to get through destructive stomach acids, most traditional probiotic supplements can have a hard time implanting in colons that are pH imbalanced or have too many harmful bacteria. HSO’s can implant in any colonic environment. Since most probiotic supplements contain live cultures, they are temperature and age sensitive, therefore requiring refrigeration. HSO’s are dormant in a capsule and activated by fluids. PRIMAL DEFENSE has at least a three-year, non-refrigerated shelf life.

Plant Sterols / Sterolins (Glucosides)
Plant sterols (phytosterols) and sterolins will become one of the most valuable tools for the repair and maintenance of the immune system we have ever known. In over 130 double-blind clinical studies, sterolins were proven to play a key role in promoting normal immune function, because they block production of Interlukin 6, the chemical associated with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Sterols and sterolins also modulate the function of T-cells that specialize in fighting viruses and certain bacteria living inside the host’s cells.

Although plant lipids are found in every fruit and vegetable, the highest natural source of sterols & sterolins known is a combination of the South African Potato and oil seed sprouts. These unique sources are hundreds of times more bioavailable than any other sources. They contain no chemical residue and are not chemically extracted. They are in their natural whole food form. The recommended minimum therapeutic quantity (400 mg.) of plant based natural Phytosterols & Sterolins is contained in the suggested daily maintenance serving of 5 capsules of PRIMAL DEFENSE. Cereal Grass Juices
Cereal grasses are the immature shoots of grass harvested before “jointing” when they become mature grain. Much richer in nutrients than grains, they are well tolerated by those who are sensitive to grains because they contain no gluten or long chain starches. Grasses can pick up more that 90 of the estimated 102 minerals found in soil and contain ample amounts of vitamin A, B, C and K as well as digestive enzymes not available in other foods.

Cereal grasses contain the antioxidant-enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), P4D1, large amounts of chlorophyll and the “Grass Juice Factor.” These substances have all been shown to slow cellular deterioration and mutation and may even help reverse aging. According to experts, P4D1 works by stimulating the renewal of RNA/DNA. The “Grass Juice Factor” has a potent anti-inflammatory effect.

Ingredient Listing
The PRIMAL DEFENSE formula is made up of three products in one 500 mg. capsule. It contains:
- 260 mg. HSO’s : L. Acidophilus, B. Bifidum, B. Licheniformis, B. Subtilus, L. Maca, botanically known as Lepidium meyenii or Lepidium Peruvianum, is a root vegetable and a member of the cruciferous family. It is often referred to as Peruvian Ginseng; though botanically it bears no relation to the true ginsengs of North America and the Far East, which are members of the araliaceae family. It’s natural growing habitat is in the upper regions of the Andes mountains in central Peru, at elevations of 13,000 to 14,500 feet above sea level, where it has a history of use dating back some 10,000 years. As both a food and medicine, Maca has regularly been consumed by native Peruvians of all ages, including children beginning as early as three years. It resembles a small turnip in appearance and is a rich source of amino acids, complex carbohydrates, sterols, fatty acids, B, C & E vitamins, as well as minerals and trace elements including: calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica. Maca also contains four alkaloids proven in scientific studies to have an ability to nourish the entire endocrine system, including the reproductive systems of both men and women. Maca is also considered an adaptogen, meaning its daily use can help one more easily adapt to the stresses of a hostile environment including: severe weather changes and traumatic life experiences, both of a physical & mental nature.

Because of its broad range of nutritional and medicinal properties , Maca appears to have a myriad of health benefits. It is now known that Maca can revitalize the mental & physical capacity of middle age and older, men and women. Today, many athletes are beginning to discover Maca for its ability to increase stamina & endurance. Even some body builders have begun using it as a safe, natural alternative to anabolic steroids.

The fertility enhancing properties of Maca are well known by young couples who live in the Peruvian highlands. Both women and men who fail at conceiving a child, will regularly eat Maca until conception occurs.

The magnificent qualities attributed to Maca have only been discovered by scientists within the last thirty years. Dr. Gloria Chacon isolated the four alkaloids which Maca contains in 1990 and injected them into rats. As a result of her research, she discovered that the alkaloids were responsible for the hormonal changes in the rats reproductive systems. She determined that these alkaloids directly act on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which in turn help regulate the function of the adrenals, thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, and testes, by releasing high levels of precursor hormones. One interesting anecdote is the fact that native women who eat Maca regularly, have a very low rate of breast cancer.

Additional animal studies on female rats fed Maca or the alkaloids isolated from Maca, displayed a significant rate of maturation of egg follicles, while male rats fed Maca or Maca alkaloids, displayed a significant increase in sperm count and sperm motility.

Several alternative health practitioners in the U.S., including some medical doctors, have been using Maca successfully with their chronic fatigue patients, in conjunction with other nutrients. A medical kinesiologist practicing in New York City who has many clients suffering from chronic fatigue says, “Adding Maca to the list of herbs and nutrients which I suggest for my clients has made a tangible difference in their energy levels. It is the most significant herb I’ve come across in years.”

Dr. Gary Null, a well respected and nationally known nutritionist, researcher and author, referred to Maca as “a strong immunostimulant and a powerful anti-fatigue herb”, on his nationally syndicated radio show “NATURAL LIVING”, on WBAI in New York City (November 6, 1997).

Medical doctors who practice naturopathic medicine in Lima, Peru, have been collecting an extensive body of clinical data on the effectiveness of Maca in treating a variety illnesses affecting those who live in modern urban environments. These include: physical and emotional stress, depression & chronic fatigue, systemic candidiasis, immune deficiency and arthritis. These same doctors will also prescribe Maca for tonifying the reproductive systems of middle age men and menopausal women, as well as for increasing muscle strength, thyroid and pancreatic function in the elderly, and for patients displaying other types of chronic illnesses.

Much of my information about Maca, has been taken from an article titled: Royal Maca TM , A Breakthrough In Alternative Medicine, by Viana Muller, Ph.D. In her article, the following cases were shared from an interview with a doctor in Peru, who has been prescribing Maca to women with post-menapausal complaints.

A 48-year-old woman from Lima, Peru who had suffered severe hot flashes and depression was prescribed pharmaceutical estrogen replacement therapy. She had used this supplemental estrogen for a few months, but was worried about its long-term effects. She stopped using it and went to Dr. M. for a “natural alternative”. He prescribed Maca and did follow-up blood work, confirming that she was maintaining a desirable post-menopausal level of blood serum estrogen. Her hot flashes disappeared and she stopped being depressed.

A 44-year-old woman from Lima, Peru who had a complete hysterectomy (including removal of the ovaries) was suffering from depression, fatigue, and hot flashes and was found to have an estrogen blood serum level of 15. After two months of taking Maca, her blood serum estrogen level was measured at 75, a level which Dr. M. said is quite acceptable to prevent osteoporosis and maintain a feeling of well-being. In fact her symptoms disappeared. It is evident that the effect of Maca in her case, was to stimulate her adrenal glands to produce more estrogen.

An 82-year-old woman from Lima, Peru had a bone scan and was found to have the beginning stages of osteoporosis. She was prescribed Maca by Dr. M. and, coincidentally, three months later suffered a fall down a flight of steep stairs. Her left hip and arm were badly bruised with hematomas and she sustained a cut on her face. Dr. M. was called to examine her before she was moved. She appeared not to have any broken bones, which was confirmed the following day by x-rays. The doctor found it remarkable that the Maca had been so effective after only a few months of therapy. He noted that Maca not only stimulates a woman’s ovaries to produce more estrogen, helping calcium remain in the bones, but also contains highly absorbable calcium, magnesium, and silica; all important bone mineral nutrients.

In the U.S., two excellent examples of Maca’s benefit for men where reported in an article by Dr. Morton Walker, titled: Effects of Peruvian Maca on Hormonal Functions. Following are direct quotations given to Dr. Walker by Gary F. Gordon, M.D., former president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine, and Burton Goldberg, President of Future Medicine Publishing.

Dr. Gordon: “We all hear rumors about various products like Maca. But using this Peruvian root myself, I personally experienced a significant improvement in erectile tissue response. I call it nature’s answer to Viagra TM . What I see in Maca is a means of normalizing our steroid hormones like testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen. Therefore it has facility to forestall the hormonal changes of aging. It acts on men to restore them to a healthy functional status in which they experience a more active libido.” “ Of course as someone interested in longevity, I’m aware that mortality comes on much sooner for those individuals whose sexual activity is diminished or nonexistent. In other words, I believe that people who engage in sex twice a week or more live longer. I’ve found sexual activity to be a reliable marker for overall aging.”

Burton Goldberg: “I’m a 72 year old man and this Maca has taken 25 years off my aging sex life. That’s pretty important to me!”

And finally, Dr. Gordon states: “Society faces a huge problem of dropping sperm counts and sex hormonal difficulties. But Maca furnishes a non-toxic solution with no downside effects. It’s a therapy that appears to offer men & women the chance for hormonal rejuvenation.”

My personal experience with Maca: In March of 1995 I attended Natural Products Expo West, the largest natural products trade show in the world, held annually in Anaheim, California. I was given a sample bottle of Maca to use while working my sales booth. As a result of taking Maca each day while on the sales floor, I became excited and amazed at how I was able to work long hours on less sleep, maintaining a high level of stamina and mental clarity throughout the show. Now that Maca is readily available, I expect to be suggesting it along with Cat’s Claw, MSM and Vitamin C ascorbate, as a multi-tiered nutritional approach to many of the maladies so prevalent in today’s polluted & stressful world.

OREGANO OIL
A Powerful Natural anti-microbial that offers a variety of health benefits.

Oregano is one of the most diverse herbal spices available. However, most of the oregano that consumers are familiar with, contains only trace quantities of the actual species and is oft times confused with marjoram, thyme and sage. Meanwhile, researchers have uncovered numerous benefits for using oregano and extracted oil of oregano. True oil of oregano offers many exciting benefits and potential for alleviating a variety of ailments.

In Herbal Renaissance, Steven Foster credits oregano as having been employed to treat indigestion, diarrhea, intestinal gas, nervous tension, insect bites, toothache, earache, rheumatism, and coughs, due to whooping cough and bronchitis (primarily for it's antispasmodic effects).

In The Cure is in the Cupboard, by Dr. Cass Ingram, it is noted that wild oregano is a natural mineral treasure house, containing a density of minerals that would rival virtually any food. It is a rich source of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, boron, and manganese. Vitamins C, natural beta carotene and niacin are also found in oregano.

In another book, Supermarket Remedies, Ingram states: "Oregano is one of Nature's finest preservatives." He suggests that if oregano is used with foods such as meat, eggs, milk, or salad, you "will greatly halt the growth of microbes and thus reduce the risk for food poisoning." The key element in oregano is the oil, which Foster points out "contains carvacrol and thymol as primary components. It is these components that appear to make oregano oil effective as an alternative treatment for parasites & worms, protozoans & amoebas, both internal and external yeast & fungal infections, including: athletes foot, systemic candidiasis, and perhaps even nail fungus. Ingram further states that "oil of oregano outright destroys all variety of fungi and yeasts, regardless of where they reside." Skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, dandruff and diaper rash may be improved with the treatment as well.

Oil of oregano may even be helpful for bee stings and other venomous bites prior to receiving medical attention.

As an anti-microbial, antiseptic and anti-parasitic agent, oil of oregano appears to be second to none. It should be strongly considered as an integral part of everyone’s natural medicine cabinet.
